If you are trying to raise your children multilingual, it can sometimes seem like hard work. One of the most important ways to overcome this is to take tiny steps. In this blog post, we will give you five simple ideas to practice your Spanish skills, achieve fluency, and increase your vocabulary while having a great time. Keep on reading to find out 5 ways your family can improve their Spanish this year!
Vocabulary stickers
Buy some Post It Notes and write down a household item per piece of paper and then stick them on those items in your home. Once your kids get used to the vocab, why not swap them around and get your kids to put them back into the right place as soon as possible. You could also describe the item so they have to identify it (like in I-spy) or go that step further and get your kids to describe the word so you have to guess. In no time, they will know the words and they will have practiced some basic sentences while playing.
Spanish Summer Camp
Attending a Summer Camp can be an amazing experience for your kids and if the camp takes place in Spanish, even better! Not only your children will meet people from all over the world, but they will also acquire important life skills such as being more independent, sharing, working in teams, following rules and many others while they put into practice their language skills. Check out LAE Kids’ summer camp.
Games in Spanish
Is there anything better than spending time with your family playing board games? Set a weekday for this activity and get all together weekly to enjoy yourselves while practicing your Spanish. How? Get Pictionary, Monopoly, or any other game you like and swap languages. Choose the game according to your child’s age and level.
Listen to music
We spend a lot of time listening to music without really paying attention to the lyrics, but what if we did? Now is your chance to do it! Whenever you go on a road trip or even for a short ride, play a Spanish song that you can all enjoy and afterward make a competition: who can remember more Spanish words mentioned in the song? If you can only remember the word, you get one point, but if you can actually explain the meaning, you get 5. Not only your kids will be entertained for a while, but you will also be acquiring new skills while getting to your destination!
Cartoons and tablet games
If your children enjoy watching cartoons or using tablets, why not put the contents on in Spanish. They will get used to it very easily and, without even noticing, they will increase their vocabulary and comprehension. Afterward, you can ask them questions like what color is the main character? What was that episode about? What did you have to do in order to reach the next level? Adapt the games and cartoons according to their age and level.
